Easier drives are ahead for Jefferson County. (Jacob Blankenship / Bham Now)

Tired of stop-and-go traffic and endless commutes? You’ll soon be able to lay off the horn and spend less time road-raging thanks to three Jefferson County road improvement projects in the works.

Read on to see which areas have the green light for much-needed upgrades—plus timelines, traffic impacts and more.

1. Pump House Road: Cahaba Heights

Do you often travel this route to Highway 280 or the Sicard Hollow Soccer Complex? Road improvements are happening now due to a partnership between Jefferson County and the City of Vestavia Hills.

The plan: a $3M project to reconfigure the intersection of Sicard Hollow Road, Blue Lake Drive and Cahaba Heights Road.

What to expect:

  • Modern roundabout (to replace the stop sign-controlled intersection)
  • Roadway alignments to reduce congestion + improve traffic safety
  • Upgraded lighting for better nighttime visibility
  • Improved signage
  • Drainage enhancements

Don’t understand the appeal of a roundabout? Here’s what Jefferson County’s Director of Roads and Transportation Chris Nicholson had to say:

“Traffic studies indicate that the roundabout will enhance vehicle flow both now and in the future, making commutes quicker and safer for area drivers.”

2. Chalkville Mountain Road: Trussville

If you live in Trussville, you’ve waited a good chunk of time for some road relief along Chalkville Mountain Road. As a fellow Trussvillian, I feel you. With just two lanes, this is one of the city’s most congested corridors, especially during peak travel times like morning and afternoon drives to and from school and work.

The good news? Jefferson County has a plan that’s currently in motion.

The plan: a $9.2M infrastructure update spanning approximately two miles from Midway Church Road to Popular Street.

What to expect:

  • Lane additions
  • Optimized signal timing
  • Updated traffic signal coordination

Completion date: Fall 2025

3. McAshan Drive: McCalla

McCalla is in a rapid growth spurt, which has led to more traffic—and therefore more road repairs and improvements.

Jefferson County’s plan: a two-phase infrastructure project to modernize McAshan Drive and improve regional connectivity

Here’s a peak at each phase:

Phase 1

  • Includes:
    • widening roadway from Bay Drive to Old Tuscaloosa Highway
  • Cost: $4.6M
  • Completion date: Summer 2026

Phase 2

  • Includes:
    • Improvements from Rock Mountain Lakes to Bay Drive
    • Enhancements to I-59/20 interchange
    • Addition of new interstate ramps
    • Construction of a diverging diamond and interchange—one of the first in the region
  • Cost: $22.5M
  • Completion Date: 2028

Recent Jefferson County road upgrades you might’ve missed

Wondering what else Jefferson County has been up to? Here are a few more projects they’ve worked on:

  • Bell Hill Road in McCalla gained wider lanes and a roundabout.
  • Roper Road in Trussville + Dolly Ridge Road in Cahaba Heights have undergone large paving projects.
  • Old Looney Mill + (little) Caldwell Mill bridges in Vestavia are in the early stages of construction and will be widened to create pedestrian facilities to increase safety for the community and travelers.
