Birmingham is in the running to host the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team trials ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Earlier this week, Gene Hallman, president of Eventive Sports confirmed The Magic City’s bid. Birmingham is one of four finalists.

“We are pleased that Birmingham is among the four finalist cities to host the 2028 US Olympic Trials in gymnastics. This event would be one of our community’s most significant sporting events ever.

Minneapolis, the host of the 2024 Gymnastics Olympic Trials, calculated the actual economic impact of this prestigious event to be more than $70 million. I am cautiously optimistic about Birmingham’s chances.”

Olympic trials could come to Birmingham

More than an Olympic trial for men’s and women’s gymnastics, the event will also feature:

  • USA Gymnastics Championships
  • Gymnastics for All GymFest
  • USA Gymnastics National Congress & Tradeshow

In recent years, Birmingham has hosted several nationally significant gymnastics championships, including the SEC Championship at Legacy Arena this past Spring.

On a global stage, The World Games in Birmingham welcomed rhythmic, acrobatic, trampoline and tumbling and parkour — all lesser known USA Gymnastics disciplines.

One of the most popular sports at the Olympic Games, the trials will determine the makeup of men’s and women’s teams that won 10 medals in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The women’s team will enter the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as the defending team gold medal winners.
