Upgrades to Willie Mays Park in Fairfield are nearly complete for its upcoming Juneteenth ribbon cutting.

Back in December 2024, Major League Baseball made national news when they announced that proceeds from the 2024 MLB Winter Meetings Charity Auction were to be dedicated toward restoring the field named after Mays in his hometown.

This past Sunday, we took a look at the ballpark the MLB committed to refurbish. We can report back that the dilapidated stands and dugouts are now freshly painted and a beautiful turf baseball diamond has been installed.

According to a MLB news release, the renovation of the ballpark is a continuation of last year’s memorable week in the Birmingham community and at Rickwood Field.

On June 19th at 9:00AM MLB Together  baseball’s social responsibility platform – along with Alabama State Senator Merika Coleman; Fairfield Mayor Eddie Penny, Councilmembers E.J. Foster, Cedric Norman, and Barakas Taylor; Mr. Michael Mays; the Peavy Family Foundation; and other community stakeholders – will help unveil the refurbished baseball and softball field at Willie Mays Park.

Birmingham and Fairfield baseball and softball groups and local youth organizations expected to use park include:

Below is a video of the new ballpark.

We look forward to the Juneteenth ceremony and more importantly seeing kids playing one again on a field named after Willie Mays, one of the greatest players ever, on and off the field.

And remember, MLB is playing the East-West Classic later in the day at Rickwood Field.
