A Symphony Celebration: The Blind Boys of Alabama

A Symphony Celebration: The Blind Boys of Alabama is a concert documentary sharing the life of the Blind Boys of Alabama’s eight-decade career.
The film is complete with performances from The Blind Boys, interviews and photos.
Henry Panion III has known and worked with the famous group since the mid 90s—so this film was a project he didn’t take lightly.
I first started working with The Blind Boys in 1994. I was commissioned by the Houston Symphony to write a whole show for them.
We did that show thinking it would be the only time. Then, over the years, other orchestras have asked us to do that show. It’s been great, they’re nice, kind and they are the hardest working people in show business.”

The film is up for two Southeast EMMY Awards this weekend:
- Audio Recording, Mixing and Design—Post Production, James Bevelle
- Musical Composition/Arrangement, Henry Panion, III
“The judging panels are professionals. They’re used to hearing great work. So when they listen to a work of ours, and something like The Blind Boys, who are iconic, historic and they have their own sound, I really like to think that [the judges] understand them and their sound.”

Panion’s film is no stranger to awards, though. A Symphony Celebration: The Blind Boys of Alabama won a total of 14 Telly Awards in May.
The Southeast EMMYs stream tomorrow, June 14 at 6:30PM. Tune in and cheer on Panion, Bevelle and the rest of “The Blind Boys” team.
