Today, the developers of Edgehill at Southtown officially cut the ribbon on Southtown Senior, the newest residential building in the mixed-use development on Birmingham’s Southside.
About Edgehill at Southtown

Six years ago, the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District approved plans to demolish Southtown Court, an aging public housing project built in Southside in 1941. Demolition began in 2021, followed by construction on a new mixed-use housing and commercial development called Edgehill at Southtown.
Located on the 26-acre campus where Southtown Court once stood, Edgehill at Southtown is a mixed-use, mixed-income development led by a public-private partnership between Southside Development Company and the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District.
The first residential building at Edgehill at Southtown—Southtown Family—was unveiled on Friday, September 20 and welcomed its first residents on Tuesday, October 1.
Edgehill at Southtown’s Senior building now open
Today, the team behind Edgehill at Southtown unveiled the development’s second residential property: Southtown Senior.
“Our first residents are set to move into Southtown Senior in the next couple of weeks. According to my property management team, we have 131 applicants that are ready to move in—we’re just 12 applicants away from 100% occupancy.”
Eddy Benoit, Jr., Founder and CEO, The Benoit Group
Located next to Southtown Family, Southtown Senior is a 158,384-square-foot residential building with 143 units of one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Inside the new Southtown Senior, residents will find walls lined with images of Birmingham’s past, from steelworkers at Sloss to civil rights leaders like Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. The building’s interior accents were designed by Mona Stephen, Principal and Creative Director for M One Design Group.

In addition to its 143 apartment units, Southtown Senior features a fitness center, community room and business center.
“Our seniors do not just sit around and play bingo all day; they want to be active, exercise and do fun things. The first thing that they asked me today was, ‘When are our programs going to start back up?’ This new space is going to give our seniors the quality of life that they deserve.”
Commissioner Sheila Tyson (District 2), Jefferson County Commission
