Post Office Pies is closing its last location in Mountain Brook on Sunday, June 29.

As reported by Bham Now last year, the pizza joint earned a spot on the New York Times’ list of the best pizza spots in America. Now, this sad news comes after the Avondale location closed more than a year ago.

Post Office Pies through the years

Post Office Pies opened its first location on March 13, 2014, in the former Avondale Post Office building.

Established by the dynamic trio—Birmingham native and renowned chef John Hall, SAWS BBQ founder, the late Mike Wilson and SAWS Chef Brandon Cain, this local pizza joint has been a staple since its opening.

With specialty pizzas crafted from local ingredients and mouthwatering pastas, it’s no surprise this spot earned a place on The NYT’s list.

The New York Times described the pizzas as:

“Neapolitan pies are expertly made, often highlighting local produce.”

Calling this restaurant’s journey ‘through thick and thin’ barely scratches the surface of its resilience. Chef John Hall relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 2021 to focus on family, he praised his leadership team that would carry on the business in his absence.

In his heartfelt Instagram post, Hall stated this decision ‘wasn’t made lightly.’

“In full transparency, our Mountain Brook lease would have renewed at $14,000–$15,000/month.

Even with volume and year over year growth, that was a difficult line for us to draw as independent operators with young families to provide for.

This was the same reason we chose to close Avondale at the end of that lease.

Ultimately there is no one signing the checks for us and we have to make decisions based not on investor whimsy, but on the actual landscape that exists in Birmingham today for an independent business.”

Hall described opening his pizzeria as one of the best decisions of his life. He will continue his culinary journey with his Washington-based Restaurant Lola located on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Be sure to stop by Post Office Pies before June 29 for one last slice from this beloved, iconic spot.
