Reading time: 2 minutes

After a four year absence, the East Lake Branch of the Birmingham Public Library is reopening on June 2.
Closed since 2021 because of HVAC issues, the historic 1928 library will unveil a number of improvements, including::
- Installation of an elevator and foyer
- Additional storage
- New restrooms
- Exterior emergency stairwell
- Revamped auditorium and stage—unused for the past 30 years
“East Lake Library is reopening its doors – and I couldn’t be prouder. Not just because it’s another win for our neighborhoods, but because it reflects what we believe: access to knowledge should never be up for debate.”
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, in a statement to Birmingham Public Library
About the East Lake Branch

Strategically located across from Barrett Elementary School and near Woodlawn High School, the East Lake Branch Library is a two-story, Georgian Revival building—featuring 8,000 square feet of usable space.
According to Birmingham Public Library, one of East Lake Library’s most notable features is the Storybook Mural by Birmingham artist Carrie Hill.
Commissioned by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the whimsical mural features beloved storybook characters—such as Little Red Riding Hood, Little Miss Muffet, Mother Goose, and the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland—marching along a path reminiscent of the “yellow brick road.”
The last renovation of the nearly century old building was in 1996-1997. Back then, the original oak furniture was refinished, new raised oak workstations were installed and a ceramic tile floor added.
