The City of Irondale has launched a new and exciting initiative geared at welcoming visitors to its community.

When travelers visit Irondale, other than a few road and town signs, it is difficult to know when you have entered the dynamic community, adjacent to the southeast side of Birmingham.

That is about to change in a big way.

Irondale’s new gateway project

This week, Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. unveiled preliminary renderings for the City of Irondale’s new gateway project at the following three strategic locations:

  • 16th Street & Crestwood Boulevard
  • The Roundabout at Cahaba Crossing
  • The Grants Mill Road Exit Off I-459

Each gateway will feature the historic town’s new branding, beautiful landscaping, and artistic elements.

For example, the roundabout design will include unique sculptures of Cahaba lilies, a water feature and lighting.

“As Irondale continues to grow and evolve, it’s important that the first impression we make reflects the pride we have in our community. “These new gateway designs will serve as bold, welcoming landmarks that celebrate our city’s unique identity and signal to everyone—residents, visitors, and future investors—that Irondale is the place to be.”

 Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr.

Below are renderings of the three new community entrances.

The Gateway project coincides with the many new exciting developments occurring throughout Irondale, including:

  • Irondale Library – opening Fall 2025
  • Civic Center at former Zamora Shrine location
  • Irondale Municipal Complex on Crestwood Boulevard
  • New Fire Station
  • Ruffner Park + dog park expanded in February 2025

The new gateway project is another timely addition to the community. Stay tuned for updates.
