El Barrio named best Mexican restaurant in Alabama

Break out the margaritas as we toast to El Barrio. This downtown Birmingham (and soon-to-be West Homewood) restaurant was just named the best Mexican Restaurant in Alabama by Cheapism.

Cheapism, a community online blog, released “The Best Mexican Restaurant in Every State,” and Birmingham’s El Barrio came out on top for Alabama.

“El Barrio’s menu stretches across many regions of Mexico, and Birmingham locals have spoken: They can’t get enough, particularly when it comes to that smoky bacon bean dip.”

Anytime I have out-of-town friends in Birmingham, I take them to El Barrio.

Located on the bustling 2nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham, El Barrio opened in 2011 and became a fast favorite—by me, the entire Bham Now office and almost every other person I’ve met in Birmingham.

From the chicken and rice soup to plantain nachos, El Barrio never misses.
