Rickwood Field to add new accessibility features
Reading time: 2 minutes

Rickwood Field will become more accessible to people with disabilities thanks to a new $900,000 project by the city.
At today’s Birmingham City Council meeting, the city awarded the project to A.G. Gaston Construction Co., Inc.
What to expect

Here are the improvements coming to the Magic City’s beloved ballpark:
- Up-to-date bathrooms
- Wide bathroom doors for wheelchair access
- Ramps for people with disabilities
“We’re very happy that the city of Birmingham has provided funding to make Rickwood Fields more accessible to those with special needs. We know that these funds will be used to create better restrooms facilities and better ramps to allow access to the stands for observation of any game that’s going on.”

Building momentum from MLB visit

Last year was a big one for Rickwood.
The ballpark hosted a game June 18 between the Birmingham Barons and the Montgomery Biscuits. During the game, fans learned of the passing of baseball icon Willie Mays. The rest of the week featured several tributes to the Birmingham native, including the unveiling of his downtown mural, his Hall-of-Fame plaque traveling to Rickwood Field and a video montage ahead of the MLB game.
A celebrity softball game also took place to celebrate Juneteenth and an MLB contest between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Fransisco Giants wrapped up the week. Both events featured additional tributes to Mays.
Summer events at Rickwood Field

Rickwood Field will look to carry that momentum into this summer with an exciting new slate of events coming to the oldest ballpark in the United States.
- Southwest Athletic Conference tournament, May 21-25, 2025.
- Birmingham Barons vs Rocket City Trash Pandas, 12:30 PM June 4, 2025.
- MLB East-West Classic, 12PM June 19, 2025
