Over 30 years after Tim Burton’s namesake 1988 film, BEETLEJUICE The Musical hit the Broadway stage.

Now, the hit musical comedy is in The Magic City as the seventh show in the Broadway in Birmingham series, and two Birmingham natives are taking the stage.

We talked to Patrick Oliver Jones and Lexie Dorsett Sharp to learn more about their role and what it means for them to be back in their hometown.

Patrick Oliver Jones

Patrick Oliver Jones went to Briarwood Christian School and Briarwood Presbyterian Church—both places that sparked his love for musical theatre.

In BEETLEJUICE The Musical, you can see him portray Otho or find him in the Ensemble.

“[Otho is] such a fun character to be. He’s very over the top, heightened and he’s also very particular and detailed. He’s a lot of fun to portray.”

Patrick has also starred in:

  • Original cast, Chicago of First Wives Club
  • North American Tours of The Addams Family + Evita
  • TV roles in Blue Bloods + Law & Order: Criminal Intent

Patrick grew up attending Broadway In Birmingham performances like Cats and Secret Garden. Nearly 25 years later, Patrick is back in Birmingham for the week. But this time, he’s the one on stage.

“It’s been 25+ years since I performed professionally in Birmingham, and it’s really quite wonderful to be back. It definitely feels like a homecoming.

I’ve auditioned for things here and there, hoping to come back to Birmingham, and BEETLEJUICE is the one that finally brought me back—it’s a great feeling.”

Lexie Dorsett Sharp

As a graduate of Mountain Brook High School, Lexie Dorsett Sharp grew up around music and the arts.

“I did a lot of things growing up with Red Mountain Theatre as well as in Mountain Brook’s theater department. The voice teacher I started with, Amy Murphy, is still my voice teacher to this day.

My mom is also a recently retired music teacher, so I come from a really musical family. A lot of my love for music and theater started here in Birmingham.”

Lexie Dorsett Sharp

In the tour of BEETLEJUICE The Musical, you can find Lexie playing a little bit of everything: Delia, Maxie Dean, Juno, Miss Argentina—maybe even Barbara.

Lexie also graced the stage in National/International Tours of:

  • School of Rock
  • Young Frankenstein
  • Elf
  • The Addams Family

Fun fact: Lexie performed on the BJCC Concert Hall stage 10 years ago when The Addams Family tour was in Birmingham!

About BEETLEJUICE

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! (Matthew Murphy)

As the seventh show of the Broadway in Birmingham series, BEETLEJUICE The Musical is based on Tim Burton’s namesake 1988 film. It tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a demon with a thing for stripes.

Quirky music, an eccentric set and a special nod to Burton’s film blend to make this hilarious musical.

You can see it at the BJCC right now!
