Demolition has officially begun on the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, marking the end of the beloved outdoor music venue’s incredible 40-year run. Once demolition is complete, the former amphitheatre site and its 43-acre campus will be utilized by the City of Pelham to expand the Pelham Arts & Entertainment District.

The Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in Pelham has been a popular mainstay of Alabama’s entertainment scene since its opening in 1986. Over the past four decades, the outdoor venue has hosted millions of fans and legendary acts like Lynyrd Skynrd, Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthew Band and countless more. Popular singer/songwriter John Mayer even recorded his hit live album, “Any Given Thursday,” at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in 2002.

Earlier this year, the City of Pelham announced that it would be buying the 40-year-old amphitheatre property from events promoter and venue operator Live Nation. According to a city press release, the amphitheatre will be demolished and redeveloped as part of the Pelham Arts & Entertainment District, which includes:

  • The Campus 124 complex
  • Areas along Amphitheater Road, Cahaba Valley Creek and Highway 119
  • Margarita Grill
  • The Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena
  • The Canopy
  • Creekside BBQ

“The opportunity to redevelop this site allows us to expand upon our efforts to create a thriving district that is attractive to businesses, visitors, and residents alike. The addition of new retail, dining, and entertainment amenities, combined with inviting outdoor spaces, will further establish Pelham as a premier destination in the region.”

The outdoor venue void left by the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre will soon be filled by the Coca-Cola Amphitheater, a new venue set to open in June. The 9,300-seat amphitheater will be located near downtown Birmingham and already has a stacked lineup for the 2025 season, including acts like:

  • Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
  • Alabama Shakes
  • James Taylor
  • And many more
