Kristen Moran has dedicated the last two years of her career to meeting and serving people across Central Alabama, but it’s not without others who pour into her just the same.
When I asked why Kristen loved her job at United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) her response was quick and simple: the service-minded people.
Read on for Kristen’s story—how she found UWCA, why she loves it and why you’ll love it, too.
Kristen Moran found a new career path with United Way of Central Alabama

Hailing from Wetumpka, Kristen graduated from Auburn University where she met her husband.
The two moved to Birmingham nearly 20 years ago, and now, they love every minute of their life with four kids in Homewood.
Kristen worked in the startup world, but in the summer of 2023, she stumbled upon a job from UWCA.
“I was working for an all-women startup that did recruiting, and someone said, ‘Hey, my friend works at United Way and they’re hiring for this position. Do you think that you could help them?’
So I said that I would look at it and send it to whoever. But when I looked at I was like, ‘I think I would like to do this.’ So I applied for the job myself.”

Kristen loves working with people at UWCA

Kristen started at UWCA as the Individual Giving Officer, where she worked with individual donors who donate anywhere from $1,000 to $9,999.
Now, Kristen is transitioning into the role of Major Gifts Officer and works with those who donate $10,000 or more to UWCA. Once donors contribute $10,000, they become part of the Tocqueville Society.
Fun fact: UWCA’s Tocqueville Society is nationally recognized as the top Tocqueville Society in the country by number of members! Comprised of nearly 1,000 members—all of who contribute $10,000 or more to United Way.
As a Major Gifts Officer, Kristen:
- Recruits new members into the Tocqueville Society
- Helps them get involved within UWCA + connects them to people they want to serve
- Shows appreciation for their dollars through events + more
“I’m a big extrovert and people person. I get to email and call people, meet them for coffee or lunch and get to know them. And I get paid to do that!”

United Way of Central Alabama is service-minded

Because of her desire to serve people and give back, Kristen looks for the same attributes in other people.
Luckily, UWCA is full of people who want to make a difference.
“Everybody here, at some level, wants to give back. When you work with a bunch of people like that, it’s just a nice environment.
They give me flexibility as a mom, which was important to me.
I worked fully remote at my last job, so coming back into the office was a little scary. When I had an interview with our CEO, he said, ‘How can we as an organization say our goal is to put families and the community first if we don’t allow our employees to do that?‘”

I’ve met my fair share of UWCA employees, and one thing rings true with each of them: They love their jobs.
Kristen directly impacts local communities through her job in the Resource Development Department, and in turn, she’s greatly impacted by the people she works with.
“It’s really affirming and rejuvenating to meet so many different people who care so deeply about giving back.”
