This week, the Homewood City Council unanimously approved a proposal to convert the former Belk space at Brookwood Village into a new medical facility for Andrews Sports Medicine, an orthopedic clinic headquartered in Birmingham.

Former Belk space approved for redevelopment

On Tuesday, April 28, representatives of the ownership group behind Brookwood Village presented the amended, final development plan for the vacant shopping mall to members of the public during the Homewood City Council meeting.

Here’s what you need to know:

First opened in 1974, Brookwood Village has faced significant challenges in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The shopping mall has closed as a result; the last remaining tenant, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, closed in late 2024.
In late 2024, Bham Now reported that world-renowned orthopedic clinic Andrews Sports Medicine was developing plans to redevelop a 135,000-square-foot section of the vacant shopping mall as a new Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center.
In January 2025, the cities of Homewood and Mountain Brook agreed to work together to determine future use for the Brookwood Village property and collaborate on any necessary zoning changes.

The development proposal was unanimously approved by the Homewood City Council, who hope that the project will encourage future investment and development in the area.

Currently, there is no official timeline for when renovations are set to begin.
