Cinco de Mayo weekend is right around the corner, Birmingham! Read on for events and restaurants to celebrate with, and the reason we commemorate this holiday.
The significance of Cinco de Mayo
Also known as Battle of Puebla Day, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862.
Cinco de Mayo is widely celebrated across the United States, and we’ve got a few ways you can join in on the fun right here in Birmingham.
Mark your calendar for these Cinco de Mayo events
1. First Friday at The Tav

Crestwood Tavern patio opens at 3PM on Friday, May 2 to kick off Cinco de Mayo weekend.
They’ll have tacos, Red Bull margaritas and live music all night long.

2. Cinco de Mayo @ Sol y Luna

On Saturday, May 3 the festivies start early with Lane Parke’s Sol y Luna.
Come for live music, all-day Cantina tacos and a special Cinco de Mayo food and drink menu. And then, do it all again on Monday!

3. Magic City Mimosa Festival—Cinco de Mimosa

Magic City Mimosa Festival is back this Saturday, but this time with a festive Cinco de Mayo theme.
A $55 ticket includes:
- Entry to the festival
- Live entertainment
- A souvenir cup
- Penny tokens to exchange for mimosas
Coining “the ultimate pre-game for Cinco de Mayo,” Magic City Mimosa Festival will have special mimosa mixes all afternoon long.

4. Cinco de Mayo @ The Pizitz Food Hall

The festivities start at The Pizitz Food Hall as soon as the doors open, and they won’t stop until a live DJ closes out the night.
Come hang out, enjoy a margarita (or a few, we won’t tell) and stay for the party from 5-8PM!

5. Cinco de Mayo with Latinos Con Onda + Mayawell Bar
Mayawell Bar in Lakeview is open on Cinco de Mayo and they’ve got everything you need: live music and drink specials.

6. Cinco de Mayo Comedy Show

Head to Uptown Jazz Lounge on Monday for a special live comedy show. There will be drink specials to celebrate Cinco de Mayo—plus, food is included in your ticket price!
