Mark your calendars, Birmingham. Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22, and there are many ways to immerse yourself in nature and give back by cleaning up and caring for our city.

1. Celebrate Earth Day: Know Your H20 @ Oak Mountain State Park

- What: We all know the importance of drinking water, but for most of us, the knowledge stops there. Find out more about H2O during this interactive program where you’ll learn about the water cycle, pollution and how you can help protect our local waterways.

2. Leeds Earth Day Fest @ Sweet Home Spirits

5. I Am the Earth @ Birmingham Public Library, Southside Branch
- What: Poetry Month and Earth Day join together during this family-friendly event at Birmingham’s Southside Branch Library. All ages, from children to seniors, will get to create a poem about the Earth. This is a great opportunity to talk about our magnificent planet and boost your writing skills, too.

6. Earth Day Creativity Challenge @ Birmingham Public Library, Woodlawn Branch
- What: Reduce, reuse, recycle! All ages will enjoy letting their imaginations run wild during this special event that lets you transform recyclable materials into something new.

7. Earth Day Celebration: The Life of Dr. Edward O. Wilson @ Hoover Public Library
- What: Put your listening ears on and head to the Hoover Public Library to honor the life and work of Dr. E. O. Wilson. Born and raised in Mobile, Wilson (1929-2021) was, and still is, considered one of the most outstanding natural scientists of our time.

8. Earth Day Conservation Collaboration with Shaheed & DJ Supreme @ Birmingham Public Library Springville Road Regional Branch
- What: You’ll want to RSVP to this unique program hosted by Birmingham City Council District 1 and Black Warrior Riverkeeper. Kids and adults will learn about conservation and recycling, how to keep our waterways clean, hear a song and play a game. There will also be a lively hip-hop performance from Shaheed and DJ Supreme.

9. Document Shredding + Electronics Recycling @ Homewood Public Library

- What: Recycling is a wonderful way to help our planet. On Friday, April 25, you can shred and recycle old documents and properly dispose of unwanted electronics, like computers and small appliances. *Limit of two bags or boxes per person.

10. Birmingham Earth Day EV Showcase @ Pepper Place
- What: Head to the Market at Pepper Place on Saturday, April 26 for farmers market fun and an Earth Day EV Showcase. Along with checking out electric vehicles and the benefits of driving them, you can even showcase your own.

11. Earth Day Litter Cleanup @ Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church, Birmingham
- What: Give back this Earth Day by cleaning up litter in and around Birmingham’s Sherman Heights Neighborhood. All attendees will meet at 8:30AM for a brief safety talk. Supplies like trash grabbers and bags will be provided. Consider bringing a small backpack to carry personal supplies, like a bottle of water and work gloves.

12. Celebrate the Trails @ Pepper Place
- What: Rails to Trails Conservancy, The Market at Pepper Place, Freshwater Land Trust and Redemptive Cycles are joining together for this epic event on Saturday, April 26. Celebrate Trails Day is a nationwide day of action created to elevate the joy + impact of trails. The event kicks off during the Market at Pepper Place with a range of activities like a special chef demo with samples + recipes, guest speakers, outdoor-minded vendors + more.

Bonus Earth Day event in Birmingham

Each and every day is a new opportunity to help our planet. Look ahead to next month for the 15th event on our list: Darter Fest at Avondale Brewing Company.
Here are the details:
- What: Join the Alabama Environmental Council (AEC) for the 12th annual Darter Fest on May 4. This special day of family-friendly festivities includes Avondale Brewing Company’s season Darter IPA, food trucks, live music + kids’ activities. The best part? You’ll support the AEC’s watershed education programs for Birmingham City Schools, with particular emphasis on the Watercress Darter—a tiny fish unique to Birmingham that needs our help!
