New Italian-inspired café, Bruto, now open in Avondale
Reading time: 3 minutes

From the same team behind Mom’s Basement comes Bruto—a new Italian-inspired café on 4th Avenue South in Avondale. We stopped by the other day for a quick bite and a look around.
Bruto now open on 4th Avenue South

Officially open as of March 25, Bruto is the newest addition to the Avondale Mills shopping center—steps away from sister spot Mom’s Basement.
“In 2020, we had to close [Mom’s Basement] due to COVID restrictions. So, we started making pizza and sort of fell in love with it.
Fast forward five years later, we decided to try to do that again, but not pigeonholed to just pizza.”
Wes Frazer, co-owner, Bruto and Mom’s Basement

Bright yellow chairs surround a community table in the center of the room, and comfy chairs and a couch sit in the corner.
Lining the walls is art curated by the owners, perfectly lit by the sunlight pouring through the large windows.
“All of the pictures and stuff hanging on the walls are all out of my personal collection.
There are some pieces that I made, signs from old Birmingham businesses, a few pieces by local artists and stuff I’ve picked up at estate sales over the years.”

What’s on the menu?

As the art-forward design draws you into the space, Bruto’s kitchen keeps you coming back.
With made-in-house foccacia, sourdough and more baked-to-perfection bread, Bruto’s menu is a blend of European-inspired fare and Southern favorites.
Here’s a sneak peek:
- Baked-in-house breads + pastries
- Sandwiches
- Sicilian-style pizza by the slice
- Drip coffee + espresso
- Nitro cold brew on draft (even nitro-infused chocolate milk)
We tried the Italian Hoagie and a T.M.P, complete with turkey, sundried tomatoes, mozzarella and house-made basil pesto. Wes recommends the blueberry scone!

Bruto joins Lag’s Eatery in local restaurants new to Birmingham’s east side in the past year.
“The more restaurants on the east side, the better, in my opinion. I think Lag’s opening has been really good for the area, and hopefully we’ll contribute to that as well.”
