After spending three decades building a career in commercial real estate in the Washington, D.C. area, Marvin never imagined he’d return to Alabama.
Originally from Sylacauga, he left after college in pursuit of professional opportunities and an exciting city life. But after facing some health challenges, his family encouraged him to come back home.
We sat down with Marvin to talk about his new home at Overture Tributary and his favorite things about this 55+ community.
1. Maintaining an independent + active lifestyle

Nestled in a prime location on Highway 280 that makes it easy for his family to visit, Overture Tributary offered Marvin exactly what he needed—an engaging community that wouldn’t compromise his independence.
“The best part is that I don’t feel like I’m in a senior living facility. It’s a community designed for people like me, where I can enjoy my lifestyle without feeling like I’ve had to slow down.
I didn’t want to be coddled, but they’ve done a great job of making sure that people here have access to everything they need.”

As hesitant as he was to start over in a new place, he quickly realized he wasn’t just moving into an apartment, he was stepping into a lifestyle designed to keep him feeling active and engaged.
2. Joining a warm + welcoming community

It’s been said that making friends gets harder the older you get, but this couldn’t be less true at Overture Tributary.
In fact, he can barely step out of his apartment without being invited to join in on something fun.
“One day, I walked by a woman painting in the lobby who invited me to come paint with her. I went over, sat down and although I hadn’t painted in over 30 years, it was really relaxing. People kept walking by us and complimenting our paintings. Then, she invited me to come to a dance class with some friends and we learned line dancing in the fitness room. After that, we did a movie night in the theater room and after all of that, we played bingo.
It was an amazing day—I can’t believe all I did was step out of my apartment and all of that happened. I even burnt some food I had put in a slow cooker that morning.”

3. Enjoying an accessible + inclusive environment

Although Marvin no longer drives, he hasn’t had to sacrifice his ability to stay involved.
Overture Tributary offers a variety of on-campus amenities and activities, allowing residents to fully engage in community life without needing to leave the property.
Marvin keeps a monthly event calendar with him at all times. During our conversation, he pulled a folded-up calendar from his pocket, pointing out all the on-site happenings:
- Sunday Service
- Weekly food trucks + breakfast buffets
- Nature trails
- Art classes + painting workshops
“You might pass by the movie room and a group of people are watching something, and you’re welcome to join in. We even have a night where some of the guys get together and watch comedy shows. I’ve seen a lot of good movies that I probably wouldn’t have seen because I can’t drive to the movie theater.”

Between the welcoming community, endless activities, and the ability to maintain his independence, Marvin has found a new home where he can thrive. Overture Tributary isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to truly enjoy life.
