“Swan Lake” tells a story of forbidden love

“Swan Lake” is the first ballet written by composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who went on to write both “Nutcracker” and “Sleeping Beauty.” Ring any bells?
Magic City Performing Arts’ “Swan Lake” tells the story of Prince Siegfried, who falls in love with Odette, a princess cursed to live as a swan by day and a human by night.
The spell, cast by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart, can only be broken by true love.
“Classical ballet is timeless. Although the stories can be fantastical and far-fetched (a princess falling asleep for a hundred years, a knight errant chasing giant windmills or a prince falling in love with a swan), these stories are a reflection of the human experience.
With ‘Swan Lake’ in particular, we see the triumph of good versus evil, but we see it as part of self-sacrifice and true love for one’s friends that breaks even the worst of spells.
Its heart and meaning make this iconic ballet so relevant and powerful for all generations.”

A unique spin on the classic ballet

MCPA’s family-friendly spin on “Swan Lake” walks you through deception, transformation and the test of devotion amidst iconic choreography, haunting music and handmade costumes.
Artistic Director Stephanie Rangel, Company Manager Jamie Grimes and the entire MCPA artistic staff worked to bring a version of the classic ballet that features roles and themes appropriate for a young cast and audience.
“MCPA’s performance of ‘Swan Lake’ offers both participants and audience members the opportunity to view the ballet with a community cast in a family friendly setting.
Traditionally, this ballet is only performed by professional companies, so MCPA became creative with casting that involves dancers as young as five years old.”
Jamie Grimes, Company Manager, Magic City Performing Arts
Joining 130 local dancers and actors, this MCPA performance features Alabama Ballet’s Patricia Lucky as Odette and Andres Castillo as Prince Siegfried.
The curtain first opened on Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” in 1877, but it’s opening on MCPA this April. Don’t miss it!
