Just in time for your Friday pick-me-up, local coffee company Whammy Coffee is set to open its first brick-and-mortar location at the Denham Building in Birmingham’s Parkside District.

We met with owners Mitch and Maddie McEver to learn more about Whammy Coffee and what to expect at its grand opening on March 21.

What started out as a weekend hobby has evolved into a full-time gig for Mitch and Maddie McEver, the husband-and-wife duo behind Birmingham’s newest coffee shop.

“My sister owns a coffee shop in Georgia, so a couple of friends and I would drive out to roast coffee on the weekends and bring some back to give away as presents to friends and family. When Maddie and I started dating, she got involved with Whammy Coffee too.

Eventually, Whammy evolved into popups at weddings and corporate events—but we both started to crave having a space of our own.”

For the past few years, Whammy Coffee has been growing a dedicated local fanbase through popups at The Market at Pepper Place and a coffee cart at Ore Mercantile. But when Atlanta-based East Pole Coffee Co. closed its space at the Denham Building, Mitch and Maddie knew the space was the perfect fit for Whammy.

“We had looked at a couple of potential locations, but each would have required us to build up the coffee shop space from scratch. When our agent called about this space, it was a no-brainer.”

Over the past few weeks, Mitch, Maddie and their team have been busy preparing the space for Whammy Coffee’s grand opening on Friday, March 21. Inside, you’ll find a bright new paint job and improved seating options.

“We wanted to create an environment that was suited for groups of friends to catch up over a cup of coffee. We took away the wall-facing bar and created several new tables where guests can chat.”

Whammy Coffee’s menu has a little something for everyone, whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or someone who just orders drip coffee (✋ guilty).

A few highlights on the menu include:

  • Signature drinks like the Double Whammy: Coca-Cola with a shot of espresso and a dash of vanilla.
  • Refreshing drinks like a Shirley Temple or Peppermint Tea.
  • Seasonal drinks like the Gold Rush and Dreamsicle Tonic.

“Every season, we’ll switch up our seasonal offerings. We have one Spring Menu drink, the Gold Rush, that I’m really excited about: it’s orange, vanilla, cardamon and rosemary. Trust me, it’s delicious!”

In addition to coffee, Whammy will offer pastries made fresh in-house.

“The idea is to have a scone, a cookie and a muffin every day and something special—like cinnamon rolls—on the weekend!”
