Meet Shane Herring—2025 Champion for the Cause

“Hope in the midst of tragedy.”
This is how 2025 Champion for the Cause Shane Herring describes the End Addiction BHAM Walk.
It’s a powerful statement that shows just how special this fundraising walk is.
Shane lost his sister to a heroin overdose in 2009. It was a devastating loss that led to his own struggles with substance use.
After seeking treatment, he managed to get his life back on track. He’s been sober since May 28, 2011.
Shane now focuses his time as an active member of Birmingham’s recovery community, serving on Addiction Prevention Coalition’s Board and attending 12-step meetings where he helps guide men through recovery.
“A lot of my work life and personal life is spent figuring out ways to improve the lives of those struggling with substance use disorders.
The most important thing everyone can do to help this population is to reduce the stigma around substance use/misuse.”
Shane Herring, Manager of Clinical Operations, UAB
How does Shane feel about being the 2025 Champion for the Cause?
“I am honored. The death of my sister changed my life. The one thing I prayed for when she died was that if her story could help just one family not have to experience what my family went through, then her death wouldn’t have been in vain.”
Shane Herring, Manager of Clinical Operations, UAB
