For Birmingham residents Susan and Mark, life in their 50s is all about relaxation. Whether they’re road-tripping out west or exploring new cities, their new home makes it easy to pack up and go without a worry.

But what makes their living situation even more special? Susan’s mother, Regina, lives just across the hall.

We sat down with Mark, Susan and Regina to talk about what makes living at Overture Tributary a perfect fit for them.

1. Perfect for an active lifestyle

When Mark and Susan began searching for a new home last year, they wanted a place that matched their active lifestyle while also staying close to family.

That’s when they discovered Overture Tributary, an active 55+ community in Birmingham located across from The Summit.

“We were living in another set of apartments after my father died, but we wanted to find an arrangement where we could live near my mother. What was missing from our lifestyle then was all the interaction that you would have with other residents. When Mark and I were at work, we wanted to have somebody for my mother to talk to if she wanted.”

Overture Tributary offers resort-style amenities, including a fitness center, heated pool, social lounges and a calendar chock full of on-site events, making it easy for residents to stay active and engaged.

“We try to utilize these things as much as possible. I work out daily, and I’ll play pickleball a couple days a week with friends. Sometimes, a few of the guys come down and we just drink bourbon on Sunday night. It’s all here, so you don’t have to go far.

Another thing we like here is it’s very close to the other things we’d like to do—we’ll have dinner and a movie at The Summit, or go to Iron City for a concert, and it’s all close by.”

2. Providing peace of mind

One of the biggest perks of moving to Overture Tributary was having Susan’s mother, Regina, within close reach. In her early 80s, Regina also wanted to maintain her independence while staying connected to family.

“It’s so convenient if I need to go over and just check on her, but she does her thing without us. Mom has embraced independent living—she takes care of herself completely.

Occasionally there are things that she might need a little bit of help with, and we’re right there. I don’t even have to put shoes on!”

Plus, living in a secure and supportive community gives Susan and Mark peace of mind when they want to venture out on trips and vacations. Since Mark has retired, the couple has embraced new adventures—they have trips planned to Boston, Colorado and New York this year.

3. A welcoming + supportive community

One of the most cherished aspects of life at Overture Tributary is the sense of community and friendship among residents. Beyond simple pleasantries, neighbors often share common interests and experiences, allowing them to support one another through life’s unique stages.

“They’re all people who’ve had the same sort of experiences, and can offer a lot of support and relate to you. If they’re not going through it now, they’ve gone through it before. For example, Mark’s mother recently died. Many of them have been there too, so there’s a support system there. People understand what you’ve been through. which is very comforting.

You see people walking other people’s dogs. You see residents take another resident to a doctor’s appointment if they need help. Everybody supports each other in little ways.”
