The Birmingham Barons are one of the most recognizable + historic minor league baseball clubs in the country.

One name from behind the scenes may not be as popular as some of the players + coaches over the years but very few have been a staple to the club as much as Curt Bloom.

The team radio announcer first took the job in 1992, spending 33 seasons with the Barons. But Tuesday, Bloom announced he would be stepping down from the role ahead of the 2025 season.

Keep reading to learn more about Bloom’s career with the Barons + see what he had to say about the decision to leave the booth.

Curt Bloom

In 33 seasons in the booth with the Barons, Bloom’s career included:

  • 5 Southern League Championships
  • 2 Southern League Broadcaster of the Year awards
  • Inducted into Southern League Hall of Fame + Barons Hall of Fame
  • Stadium change (Hoover Met to Regions Field)
  • Calling every Rickwood Classic

The Barons won the Southern League for the first time in more than a decade in 2024, allowing Bloom to go out as a winner.

Bloom released a full statement on social media to announce the decision with just over a month before the 2025 begins. Read part of that statement below:

“In 1992, Bill Hardekopf said, ‘you’re hired.’ Thus began a 33-year journey that I will always cherish. It’s not time to get off the bus and let someone else take their turn as the radio announcer for the Birmingham Barons. One letter, one tweet, one post, could never capture my true feelings on what I experienced in my three decades as lead broadcaster for one of the most recognizable teams in all of MiLB…

“For now, as Bruce Springsteen sang ‘this train, dreams will not be thwarted, this train faith will be rewarded.’ May today be the best day of your life… but tomorrow be even better!'”

Curt Bloom

If you’ve watched or listened to sporting events around central Alabama over the last three decades, there’s a good chance you recognize Curt Bloom’s voice. And he said he will be staying on some of those assignments including UAB sports and Vestavia Hills football.

Michael Jordan era

Shortly after he got the job, Bloom got to be the announcer for Michael Jordan’s short baseball career when he played for the Barons in 1994.

Some other big names from the Barons team during Bloom’s tenure included:

  • Tim Anderson
  • Wally Backman (coach)
  • Mark Buehrle
  • Mike Cameron
  • Joe Crede
  • Ray Durham
  • Terry Francona (coach)
  • Miguel Olivo
