It’s a new week in The Magic City, and we’ve got a few new businesses you need to know about.

From a new dinner hot spot downtown to a new sushi restaurant in Edgewood, read on for a roundup of what’s now open and coming soon to Birmingham. Plus, join us in saying goodbye to one local business.

Now Open

1. Wooden City | Morris Ave

When Wooden City opened last week on Morris Avenue, the Bham Now team had to go try it out.

Opened by a trio of business partners from Tacoma, Washington (chef Jon Green, restauranteur Abe Fox and design/builder Eddie Gulberg), Wooden City specializes in American bar food with unique flavors and ingredients.

Plus, they have a killer list of cocktails and wines. This is definitely our new go-to for small plates and drinks after work.

2. The Local | Hueytown

There’s a new coffee shop coming to the Birmingham area. According to a recent post on Facebook, The Local opened last week in Hueytown.

The Local will feature a variety of drinks and snacks, including:

  • Coffee, cappuccinos, lattes, mochas + frappes
  • Smoothies and Acai bowls
  • Cheesecake + cake pops

In addition to food and drink, customers will be able to find succulents and flower arrangements at The Local.

3. Han’ei Kaya Sushi Grill | Edgewood

With more than 40 years of combined restaurant experience, the owners have worked at and founded several of Birmingham’s beloved sushi restaurants, including Nori Thai and Sushi and Shiki Birmingham. The menu consists of all kinds of noodle dishes, cooked and raw sushi, and even custom rolls.
