How did i3 get started?
The i3 Academy network of public charter schools first came to be as an elementary school in 2020 and added a middle school the following year. Each campus offers tuition-free learning, where students, families, teachers and staff work together to address the individual needs of each student.
i3 Academy High School was established in response to the desire expressed by both students and parents from i3 Middle for an extended educational experience that mirrored the environment they had grown to cherish. The first cohort of high school students began ninth grade in 2024. The school plans to add a grade level each year through the 2027-2028 school year, accommodating students in grades K-12.
Students are highly encouraged to enroll by the priority deadline.
What makes i3 stand out?
All i3 Academy schools are Cognia and STEM-accredited and feature a curriculum designed to inspire curiosity and ignite a passion for learning in students. By integrating project-based learning with real-world problem-solving skills, learners are motivated to think critically and creatively. Programs like Career Explorations at i3 High School and Makerspace at i3 Elementary and Middle Schools make this possible.
In addition to offering all core academic classes, the high school curriculum includes foreign languages, graphic arts and athletics to provide an enriching educational experience.
One of the standout features of i3 Academy High is its partnership with Jefferson State Community College. This partnership opens doors to dual credits that allow high school students to earn college credits while still in high school. Students can also explore vocational training through professional certification courses, positioning them for future academic success.
Examples of professional certifications and associate degrees available to high school students include:
- Accounting
- Business
- Child Development
- Computer Information Systems Technology
- Construction Management
- Culinary + Hospitality
- Law Enforcement
- Manufacturing Tech
- Welding
i3 leadership believes this “cradle-to-career-or-college” approach is the key to receiving rigorous college and career prep.
“We are excited to be a joint participant with parents in providing the best educational experience for our students. Through our partnership with Jeff State, we’ve developed a dynamic academic program allowing students to explore their strengths as they enter adulthood—preparing them for higher education or career endeavors.”

i3 students are leaders
This fall, i3 Academy proudly reached a milestone for the young institution. The elementary and middle schools achieved the City of Birmingham’s second highest and highest 2024 Alabama Report Card scores, respectively, among non-magnet, public schools. Both schools also earned 100% in the growth category of the Alabama Report Card Score.
These remarkable accomplishments reflect the school’s dedication to academic performance and student success. Parents can feel confident knowing their children are attending a school that excels in educational outcomes and prepares them for future opportunities.
“We are committed to prirotizing the individual needs of each student and providing them with a well-rounded education that prepares them for lifelong success. Our curriculum is designed to challenge and engage students, while allowing them to pursue their passions and talents.”
