Today is Giving Tuesday, a global movement celebrating generosity, volunteering and spreading kindness.
Easterseals of the Birmingham Area is a nonprofit centered on providing kids, adults and teens with disabilities a chance to excel in careers and advocates for the disabled community.
Read on to learn more about how you can support a great local cause on Giving Tuesday and beyond.
What is Easterseals of the Birmingham Area?
The rehabilitation center dates all the way back to the 1950s when a teacher in the Birmingham area went to the homes of handicapped individuals to teach them arts and crafts. Since then, the nonprofit has blossomed into providing more opportunities and resources to those who need it the most.
In October 2023, Easterseals opened its computer lab designed to help adults who go through Easterseals’ Adult Readiness Class prepare resumes, cover letters and anything else they may need the computer for.
“The computer lab is greatly important because without it, consumers would not be able to know what jobs are available and what they need.
Some of them don’t know how to use a computer, like I did for years, so they can now come in and utilize the occupational skills training, which teaches them a variety of skills.”

Now, the organization is celebrating the impact of Giving Tuesday and what it can mean for their company. This charitable day encourages people to give back to their community by donating or volunteering. Easterseals seeks to provide more resources to its consumers by holding a fundraiser, with every dollar matched by the organization.
“Giving Tuesday is so important because it’s a great way to show the community what our nonprofit does!
It’s also a great way for us to have donors invest in the good we can do in the community, which is all geared by donations.”
