The historic Lyric Theatre in Birmingham is getting a modern upgrade to its iconic facade with new digital marquees.

The two LED video boards which face 3rd Avenue North and 18th Street North replaced the former marquees which used aluminum letters that had to be handset by employees.

The two digital marquees use the same technology used in the Alabama Theatre’s digital marquee which was installed in 2020.

A spokesman for the Lyric said decorative framing elements for the LED signs are still being manufactured and will be added upon their completion.

The Lyric Theatre was built in 1914 as a venue for vaudeville-style shows and hosted major stars such as the Marx Brothers, Mae West, Sophie Tucker, Will Rogers and Milton Berle.

Though seating was segregated, the Lyric was one of the first venues in the South where black and white patrons could watch the same show at the same time for the same price.

After a decades-long period of neglect and vacancy, the Lyric underwent an $11 million renovation effort and reopened to the public in 2016.

The Lyric now hosts between 75 and 100 events every year, including private and corporate events.
