8 ways to celebrate Veterans Day in The Magic City

Did you know that Birmingham is home to the oldest Veterans Day Parade in the country?

Keep reading to learn more about the National Veterans Day Parade + other ways you can honor our veterans during the month of November.

1. National Veterans Day Parade

Hosted by The Greater Alabama Council and the Boy Scouts of America, the National Veterans Day Parade was organized over 70 years ago by WWII veteran and Birmingham native Raymond Weeks—making it the oldest Veterans Day parade in the country. 

2. 18th Annual Veterans Day Salute

This special event allows our community to celebrate the brave men and women who served our country. There will be live music, hors d’oeuveres, guest speakers and a guest tribute to those who fought for and served

3. UAB Veterans Day 5k

Run, roll or stroll at UAB’s Veterans 5k presented by UAB Student Affairs. All money raised in this marathon will go to the UAB Veteran Relief Fund that aims to help veterans and dependent students needing help with housing or other financial relief.

4. Veterans Day Ceremony at the Alabama Veterans Memorial

A solemn ceremony honoring veterans with speeches, a wreath-laying and a moment of silence. It’s a chance for the community to come together and pay respects.

5. Birmingham VA Medical Center Open House

Join the Birmingham VA in promoting wellness by planting trees at the Veterans Memorial Grove around the lake and walking track in East Lake Park. All gloves and needed tools will be provided.

6. City of Hoover Salute to Service

Join the City of Hoover as they honor local heroes and give a heartfelt dedication to express gratitude toward their service.

7. Memorial Service at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

A reflective service honoring the contributions of veterans in the civil rights movement, focusing on their sacrifices and legacy.

8. Veterans Day Celebration – Vestavia Hills

This annual Veterans Day will feature patriotic-themed entertainment programming, antique military vehicles and more. Be sure to mark your calendars for this highly anticipated event.
