The idea for this amazing stunt came from Homewood band director Chris Cooper, who had seen the concept being done before and wanted to see if he could do it better.

“Last October, someone in Mississippi had this gyroscope for sale and I just went ‘I want it.’

My dad and I drove to Jackson, MS and bought it. I didn’t tell my staff, I didn’t tell my assistant director, I didn’t tell my drum instructor–I just showed up with it.”

Don’t worry– he assured us that the drum set was fully strapped down and secured before any students entered.

According to Cooper, he knew once he had the idea that Jack Mitchell had to be the star.

“There’s something about Jack where I just knew he was the right kid to do it. He’s the kid that made the magic happen.

We didn’t even have a try-out.”

Homewood’s band of 375 students is know for its exciting and innovative performances, but this one took it to the next level.
