Southern Exposure films donated to all 18 Birmingham Public Library locations
Reading time: 3 minutes
Alabama Rivers Alliance and Black Warrior Riverkeeper have recently donated copies of Southern Exposure, an award-winning documentary series, to all 18 Birmingham Public Library (BPL) locations.
The series documents Alabama’s natural resources in an effort to raise awareness and appreciation for our state’s beauty and important environmental issues that impact all of us.
Southern Exposure tells stories of Alabama
Southern Exposure is a film fellowship program that brings various filmmakers together to tell authentic stories of Alabama’s environment and the people who cherish it.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Black Warrior Riverkeeper once again to ensure the 2023 Southern Exposure films are accessible for free across Birmingham and beyond.
This ongoing collaboration with Birmingham Public Library continues to help us and our partners amplify the inspiring stories and critical issues within our communities, featuring those special Alabamians protecting our rivers and enriching the heart of the Black Warrior River watershed, year after year.”
Cindy Lowry, Executive Director, Alabama Rivers Alliance
Now available at Birmingham Public Libraries
Each of BPL’s 18 locations now has one DVD copy of the 2023 edition of Southern Exposure.
DVDs of previous Southern Exposure editions are available at all BPL branches thanks to Alabama Rivers Alliance and Black Warrior Riverkeeper’s prior donations.
Some featured short films include:
- Mussel Memory, which explores the significance of reconnecting river systems + protecting Alabama’s freshwater mussels, our natural water filtration system.
- Trashed, which tells the story of the aftermath of a 2022 landfill fire near Birmingham that raged for months, suffocating multiple counties in smoke and odor + the importance of protecting our water, air and other natural resources.
- Fl*shing Injustice, which documents national and international media recognition of the egregious sanitation and health challenges facing counties across the Black Belt + how community organizations are making a positive impact.
