For empty-nesters and retirees who aren’t slowing down anytime soon, there is a 55+ community in Birmingham where residents are staying social and active with tons of unique activities, fun events and more.

We spent the day at Overture Tributary to discover what residents love about this resort-style community.

Overture Tributary’s goal is to create resort-style living with strong support for Birmingham’s 55+ community.

“We moved from Denver to Birmingham when our son went to school here. We waited for Overture Tributary to be built for two years with the promise of community and making friends.

They really delivered. I actually went on a cruise with someone I met after only two weeks here!”

The superstar behind Overture Tributary is event coordinator Dwan Christian, who plans jam-packed calendars of events, activities and meals for residents every day.

We spoke to Dwan about how she encourages active living, learning new skills and a strong sense of community. Learn what she told us below.

1. Building community + relationships at Overture Tributary

As you walk through the facility, you’ll quickly see it was built to foster a sense of community.

One standout feature is the movie room, where they show a new flick every Saturday evening. Another recent addition is the free library, a resident-curated collection of books and magazines for members to borrow and share.

According to Dwan, residents are very involved and love to come up with their own ideas for new events and activities.

“I take as much input from residents as possible. If you look at our calendar, over half of the events are resident-led.

They might come to me and say they want to go to the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, but don’t have anyone to go with. So I’ll make a sign-up sheet available and have people volunteering to go and drive there.”

2. Learning new skills at this friendly 55+ community

At Overture Tributary, residents have lots of opportunities to discover unknown skills and even teach each other new things.

If you take a look at their event calendar, you’ll find all kinds of classes and crafts including:

  • Canvas painting
  • Cooking demos
  • Gardening club
  • Line dancing
  • Poker 101
  • Scrapbook making

One resident told us about a newly formed women-led poker group, taught by a male resident affectionately known as “Don Juan.” (Did we mention that several residents have nicknames?)

“It’s really like that with everything here. Whatever activity or game it is, if you want to learn how to do something, people will teach you.”

3. Staying engaged in an active senior community

Something I loved learning about Overture Tributary is how everyone who works there is invested in keeping residents active. They offer a wide range of sports, fitness classes and recreational activities designed to keep everyone energized and engaged.

Here’s a peek at some key ways they help residents stay fit:

  • Fitness center
  • Pickleball court
  • Yoga studio
  • Swimming pool
  • Games + yoga on the lawn

“They’re really embracing life, and they make it work. It’s easy to have the mindset that you’re aging, and you can’t do this or that. It doesn’t matter your age; you can still have fun and try new things.”
