Beth Stewart’s conservation legacy

If you love the beautiful Cahaba River as we know it, there are a few things you can thank Beth Stewart for.

Over the course of 29 years, Beth has:

  • played a crucial role in resolving crisis-level raw sewage dumping issues in the Birmingham area by leading a Clean Water Act lawsuit in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • created a Supplemental Environmental Project that secured $30 million for stream buffers in Jefferson County
  • established the regional Freshwater Land Trust
  • partnered with local organizations to protect 7,000 acres of Birmingham Water Board land from development

“It means so much that we’ve inspired, improved regulations for, and collaborated to achieve sustainable development design to better protect our waters.

Since I was raised in Birmingham in the 1960s, my love letter to the region has been a deep commitment to growing the diversity of who we are led by and serve as we expand support and influence for the River. All of you have made this possible!”

With Beth’s leadership over the last few decades, Cahaba River Society has also integrated water sustainability into the region’s green building movement and improved stormwater regulations.
