Welcome to August, Birmingham!

The Magic City is buzzing with new businesses this summer.

From an award-winning wine bar to a California-based hot chicken joint, read on for who’s opening their doors around Birmingham. Also, join us in saying goodbye (for now) to one local business.

Open

1. Curry Corner | English Village

Back in March, Bham Now reported that a new Indian restaurant was opening soon in English Village

As of last week, Curry Corner has officially begun serving Indian favorites like chicken tikka masala, panner biryani and more.

According to co-owner Buwhan Bashel, Curry Corner’s menu is more focused on healthier food, meaning the majority of their dishes are not fried and focus more on Tandoori (clay oven) cooked dishes with Indian spices.

2. Salvatore’s Pizza & Pasta | Downtown Bham

If you’ve ever eaten at one of Salvatore’s Pizza & Pasta locations, you know there’s a reason why customers keep coming back.

Founded in 1984, this family-owned and operated pizzeria currently has two locations in Hoover and Highway 280, but its newest store is located in the heart of downtown Birmingham near UAB.

Whether you’re grabbing a slice of pizza or some of Salvatore’s famous lasagna, you’ll be sure to leave full and satisfied.

Coming Soon

3. Golden Age Wines | 2nd Ave N

This James Beard nominated wine bar is coming to downtown Birmingham.

Golden Age Wine is preparing to open a second location two doors down from Helen on 2nd Ave N—the twist? It’s outdoor only.

Unlike the wine shop’s Mountain Brook location, the new location will step away from retail and focus on serving wine by the glass and food completely outdoors.

4. Yellowhammer Antiques | Leeds

A new antique mall is coming soon to Leeds.

Yellowhammer Antiques, owned by Shane and Erica Spray, is an upscale antique and vintage mercantile with a range of unique vendors selling furniture, clothing, locally-made goods and more.

While we still don’t know its official opening date, Yellowhammer has already acquired dozens of vendors and is getting ready to open soon.

5. Dave’s Hot Chicken | Vestavia Hills

Alabama’s first Dave’s Hot Chicken is bringing their mouthwatering Nashville-style hot chicken to the Vestavia City Center in Fall 2024.

Founded by three childhood friends in 2017, Dave’s Hot Chicken started out in a parking lot in East Hollywood. Since then, the fast-casual restaurant has grown to 199 locations worldwide as of April 2024, with more locations on the way.

According to the Vestavia Voice, Guthrie’s, the popular Alabama-based chicken joint, is building a new restaurant at the site of the former Hardee’s near Vestavia Bowl at 1437 Montgomery Highway.

Touted as the original chicken finger restaurant, Guthrie’s hopes to open the Vestavia location by the end of 2024.

7. Marshalls | Highway 280

Back in December 2023, Bham Now reported that Marshalls would be joining the lineup of business at River Ridge Shopping Plaza on Highway 280.

We have confirmed that the popular retailer will be opening this month on August 29.

8. Bin Depot | Bessemer

Located in Bessemer, Bin Depot is offering high-quality merchandise for a steal.

The store features a dynamic pricing model where prices start at $14 on Fridays and drop daily until they reach just 50¢ on Thursdays. You’ll be able to shop deals on a wide variety of products, including electronics, home goods, clothing and toys.

The gender-free resale store has focused on affordable fashion, gender-free expression and support for small businesses.

We’re sad to see them go, but excited to see what owner Sarah Rudolph has in store for the future!
