Celebrated on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S.

As a historic location in the Civil Rights movement, Birmingham is always a hot spot for Juneteenth celebrations. From a block party to a golf fundraiser, here are a few ways to celebrate Juneteenth in The Magic City this year.

1. Juneteenth: A Celebration for the Culture | June 15

  • What: Hosted by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute alongside Urban Impact and CREED63, this free event will feature live music, dance, workshops and retail + food vendors.
  • When: Saturday, June 15 | 10AM-4PM
  • Where: 16th St N (between 3rd Ave + 6th Ave)
  • Cost: Free

2. Juneteenth Welcome Walk | June 15

  • What: Come out to East Lake Park for the 2nd annual Juneteenth Walk. Starting at 8AM, the event will gather walkers of all ages to celebrate and reflect.
  • When: Saturday, June 15 | 8AM
  • Where: 8101 4th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35206
  • Cost: Free | Register now

3. The Wave of Freedom | June 15

  • What: Located at Kelly Ingram park, this all-day event commemorates the Juneteenth Holiday with live entertainment, free prizes, educational games for the youth, vendors + more.
  • When: Saturday, June 15 | 9:30AM-5:30PM
  • Where: 500 17th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203
  • Cost: Free

4. Kiwanis Club of Vulcan Juneteenth Brunch | June 23

  • What: Join the Kiwanis Club of Vulcan for brunch to celebrate Juneteenth. All proceeds will benefit students in Birmingham City Schools.
  • When: Sunday, June 23 | Noon-3PM
  • Where: 1713 4th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203
  • Cost: $50 | Tickets

5. Juneteenth Divine 9 plays 9 | June 19

  • What: Calling all golfers! Whether you’re a golf pro or just a beginner, come out for a day of friendly competition, great company and stunning views on the course. Proceeds will benefit scholarships for local Birmingham students.
  • When: Wednesday, June 19 | 8AM-4PM
