Celebrated on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S.
As a historic location in the Civil Rights movement, Birmingham is always a hot spot for Juneteenth celebrations. From a block party to a golf fundraiser, here are a few ways to celebrate Juneteenth in The Magic City this year.
1. Juneteenth: A Celebration for the Culture | June 15
- What: Hosted by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute alongside Urban Impact and CREED63, this free event will feature live music, dance, workshops and retail + food vendors.
- When: Saturday, June 15 | 10AM-4PM

2. Juneteenth Welcome Walk | June 15
- What: Come out to East Lake Park for the 2nd annual Juneteenth Walk. Starting at 8AM, the event will gather walkers of all ages to celebrate and reflect.

3. The Wave of Freedom | June 15
- What: Located at Kelly Ingram park, this all-day event commemorates the Juneteenth Holiday with live entertainment, free prizes, educational games for the youth, vendors + more.

- Cost: Free
4. Kiwanis Club of Vulcan Juneteenth Brunch | June 23
- What: Join the Kiwanis Club of Vulcan for brunch to celebrate Juneteenth. All proceeds will benefit students in Birmingham City Schools.
- When: Sunday, June 23 | Noon-3PM

5. Juneteenth Divine 9 plays 9 | June 19
- What: Calling all golfers! Whether you’re a golf pro or just a beginner, come out for a day of friendly competition, great company and stunning views on the course. Proceeds will benefit scholarships for local Birmingham students.
