Birmingham Museum of Art welcomes Maggie Crosland

In April, BMA welcomed Maggie Crosland as its Fariss Gambrill Lynn and Henry Sharpe Lynn Curator of European Art. (Jacob Blankenship / Bham Now)

Previously, Maggie served as the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow in Late Medieval European Art at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

“The BMA eagerly anticipates the fresh perspectives and innovative initiatives Maggie will bring to its European art collection. Her appointment marks an exciting new chapter in the museum’s commitment to developing the objects and narratives of our acclaimed European holdings within the context of the Museum’s burgeoning global collection.”

“My specialist areas are medieval and Renaissance art, so I am of course excited to work with the BMA’s renowned Kress collection and build on its strengths in that area.

I am also very interested in artworks that tell us new stories about European art. There are so many voices that have been left out of the historical narrative, so I look for artworks that can bring us new perspectives on the people of the past.”

When I asked Maggie what drew her to the Birmingham Museum of Art, she shared two main reasons.

“The first is the museum’s incredible collection, and track record of exciting, dynamic exhibitions.

The other main reason is that the museum is so dedicated to the city of Birmingham.

I have learned in my career that I want to curate for the community I am in, and this is what really drew me to this position. The fact that the museum’s mission is focused on Birmingham is amazing and really important.”

When I asked Maggie about her favorite hidden gem in the art world, she revealed that it’s any local art museum! Her passion for art history started with visits to local museums in Miami during her childhood.

The great news is we have an amazing local art museum right here in Birmingham. Engage with the art exhibitions on display now and explore the diverse collection of more than 27,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and decorative arts.

Plus—make sure to say hello to Maggie and give her a warm welcome to The Magic City.

“I can’t wait to explore Birmingham! I have only recently moved here from St. Louis, and I am looking forward to experiencing all the things this dynamic city has to offer.”
