Alabama A&M University has put forward an offer to purchase Birmingham-Southern College for approximately $52 million, confirmed by multiple media outlets, including WHNT-19 in Huntsville.

According to several reports, the former college would be used as a standalone campus under the A&M umbrella if a deal is accepted. The HBCU land grant university would also seek to retain BSC’s credentialed faculty and staff.

Several colleges interested in buying BSC

Alabama A&M is not the only institution of higher learning interested in buying the liberal arts school property.

When the news broke in late April about A&M’s intention to purchase BSC, Senator Rodger Smitherman, who represents Birmingham-Southern College (BSC)  told Bham Now several schools and a consortium are also working to purchase the school.

“Miles College, Alabama State and a consortium of HBCUs are also vying to purchase the school as well.”

The 192-acre college, which has 45 buildings is slated to close on May 31st.
