Birmingham is home to a vibrant community of local artists. From musicians to painters and artisans, the city is crawling with talent and creativity.

Keep reading for a roundup of seven local artists who are leaving their marks on The Magic City.

1. Jahnah Camille

At only 19 years old, Jahnah Camille is already an established talent. Her style of lyrically-driven indie rock with shoegaze and grunge influence draws inspiration from 90’s legends like Liz Phair and Fiona Apple.

Recently, Jahnah was signed to NYC-based record label Winspear, with a debut EP coming June 2024.

2. C.A. Jones

C.A. Jones is a singer-songwriter based in Birmingham. Born in Florence, Alabama, Jones grew up inspired by the beauty and mysticism of the South. Through his lyrics and compositions, Jones explores creative ways of storytelling through music.

You might also know him as the mind behind Room 412, a private gallery in downtown Birmingham that regularly hosts art exhibits, artist talks and more.

3. Taygaloo Cat

A rising young talent in the Birmingham DIY scene, Taygaloo Cat‘s sound has a homemade, acoustic feel. One of the stand out artists of indie label Barklate, you can catch Taygaloo Cat performing across Birmingham, Gadsden and Atlanta.

4. Kevin Booth

Kevin Booth is a Birmingham-based mixed media painter known for his abstract-impressionist style. A former employee at El Barrio, you can still see Booth’s work decorating the restaurant’s halls.

5. Byron Sonnier

Raised by a Cajun Catholic family in Southern Louisiana, Byron Sonnier became interested in the many Catholic icons and symbols that surrounded him at a young age.

Many of his pieces feature images like the sacred heart, snakes, and even the Black Cat Firework logo which has its origins in China as a symbol of good luck and fortune.

6. Studio Verus

Studio Verus is a Birmingham-based company creating high quality fine jewelry. The brainchild of Elliott Martin and Mary Grace Tracy, Studio Verus designs stunning creations such as cuban links, gold herringbone chains and tourmaline necklaces.

7. Danielle Portera Lang

When Bham Now posted a Facebook poll asking our audience which local artists they love, the artist with the most comments was Danielle Portera Lang.

Lang is a Birmingham-based painter whose subjects are reflections of her community—Cahaba Lillies, Vulcan, Electra and more. She also specializes in portraits, pet portraits and public murals like the one pictured above at Cahaba Brewing.
