In a role that’s personal and all about connection, it’s no surprise that many local realtors are passionate about giving back to their communities.
We sat down with four Ray & Poynor agents to learn how they’re making Birmingham better in unique ways—from helping children with severe health issues to investing in nursing students.
1. Jane Huston Crommelin, Magic Moments
As one of Ray & Poynor’s consistent top producers, Jane Huston Crommelin knows the importance of engaging with and supporting her local community.
She has been involved with many organizations, including the Junior League, The Ballet Guild of Birmingham, the Linly Heflin Unit and more. But, one of the most special ways she gives back is serving on the the board of Magic Moments— an organization dedicated to making special memories for children in Alabama with chronic life-threatening or acute life-altering medical conditions.
“One of my dearest friends started Magic Moments. She and I unfortunately both lost a child, so this is my way of giving back to children with severe health issues.
I think we all need to help and contribute to making this world a better place—especially these days.”

2. Kathryn Dorlon, Antiques at the Gardens
Kathryn Dorlon was first introduced to Antiques at the Gardens in 2016. She was blown away by the work that went on behind the scenes and knew she wanted to help.
The annual event benefits the mission of the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, which seeks to protect and share the wonders of the gardens and allow them to be used for learning and inspiration.
“We are blessed with many amazing places in Birmingham, and I love that the gardens are a place where all can come to enjoy the beauty, free of charge.
With the help of this event, we can keep these beautiful and impactful gardens growing for all to enjoy for many years to come.”

Kathryn loves how the talents and skills needed to help put on this event—education, hospitality and personalization—are in line with her professional skills.
3. Robin Kidd, UAB School of Nursing and Visitors Board
Robin Kidd became involved with the UAB School of Nursing and Visitors Board through a scholarship established by her family that helps pay the tuition of a nursing student each year.
She said it’s been a privilege to meet the amazing students and represent the UAB School of Nursing, which is currently #7 in the nation in public institutions.
“I am a strong believer in community involvement and have always received more than I have given. It makes me more aware and empathetic towards others.
You can give in so many ways—through time, contributions or helping spread the word about a particular event or organization.”

4. Betsy French, Rise Against Hunger
Betsy French participates through her church in Rise Against Hunger—a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies.
Her church, Canterbury United Methodist, has been participating for several years and achieved their goal of packing over 4.5 million meals for people in the Philippines.
Having volunteers from 4-year-olds to 90-year-olds, Rise Against Hunger is a super unique way to serve alongside other members of the community.
“I am a people person and enjoy problem solving. Whether it is finding the perfect home or organizing a group activity, that’s my area of expertise.
Everyone has something to share: gifts, talents, resources and time.”
