If you asked a stranger to name their favorite building in Birmingham, I’d wager that the vast majority would choose the City Federal Building. Standing 27 stories tall, the impressive structure is topped by a bright neon sign that illuminates the Birmingham skyline every night.

Read on to learn more about the historic City Federal Building AND a brand-new condo/townhome inside that just hit the market.

Towering over Birmingham since 1913

In the early 1900s, the Jefferson County Savings Bank constructed an opulent new headquarters for itself in downtown Birmingham. Standing 325 feet above street level, the tower was the tallest in Alabama—and remained so until 1969!

Fun fact: The City Federal Building was designed by prominent local architect William Weston, who also worked on the Brown-Marx Tower, the Woodward Building, the Frank Nelson Building and other projects in Birmingham.

By the early 2000s, the City Federal Building was in a state of disrepair. Luckily, a developer out of Atlanta began a $20M renovation to transform old office space into new, state-of-the-art townhomes.

If living at the City Federal Building sounds appealing, you’re in luck. A brand new two-bed, two-bath mezzanine condo just hit the market, and it won’t be there for long.

Originally the office and boardroom of the bank president, the mezzanine condo was meticulously renovated last year by local artist Jeanne Clarke.

“The painter Camille Pissaro once said, ‘Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing,’ and I took that as my mantra when restoring this usit.

It took a lot of work, but I’m very happy with how lovely, happy and peaceful the unit has become. I get such a serene feeling when I visit and I know the next owner will feel the same.”
