Big City Mountaineers (BCM), a leading  provider of experiences for youth in the outdoors, is seeking volunteers in Birmingham.

Back in November of 2023, BCM announced plans to make The Magic City their first program in the South.

This new program provides transformative experiences through connections to nature that strengthen life skills and build community for youth from disinvested communities.

BCM is looking for individuals who are passionate about sharing the outdoors with the next generation. Any backpacking experience is valued as well as experience with youth.

For instructors, they are seeking individuals willing to get their Wilderness First Responder Certification.

BCM volunteers take youth (12-18 years old) on three outings:

  • Day hike
  • Front country camping trip
  • Week-long (5-7 days) expedition

All BCM trips are scheduled to take place from April through June, in and around Birmingham.

Ideally, volunteers participate in the whole series (day hike, camping trip, expedition)  to promote better relationships with the youth served.

Bham Now caught up with Margaret Cartner, the  Regional Program Manager at BCM in Birmingham. A native of Irondale and former teacher at Huffman High School, here’s what Margaret had to say about launching this inaugural program in the South.

“I am honored to be the one to launch BCM in Birmingham. We have the natural beauty and the passionate people to sustain it in our community long term.

The youth of Birmingham deserve this opportunity and I am excited for our Magic City to help them discover the beauty and strength within themselves.”
