This past Christmas, 200 Birmingham-area children awoke to find a Bindeybook Creative Book Kit in their stockings—and with it, the chance to share their own story. Bindeybook makes it easy for young people to create high-quality, custom keepsake books with a homemade feel in a hardback cover.

Keep reading to find out about the partnership between Bindeybook and Grace Klein Community that made this happen, how the kids reacted and how you can provide these kits to the children in your organization.

Grace Klein Community is a Bessemer-based Christian nonprofit that provides relief to the poor, disadvantaged and underprivileged across Alabama and globally.

Rocky Heights Print & Binding, parent company of Bindeybook, has been a proud sponsor of Grace Klein for years.

During last year’s Christmas season, Bindeybook shared their Creative Book Kit with Grace Klein who then shared them at their annual “Papa J’s Workshop” event, just in time for the holidays.

With the support of sponsors, Grace Klein Community purchased 200 books to give out to parents. At the yearly “Papa J’s Workshop,” parents of children served by the nonprofit “shop” for gifts—including Bindeybooks—at no cost.

Natalie King, Grace Klein Community’s Development Director, shared about the impact the kits had on the children:

“A lot of kids’ faces lit up when they received their Creative Book Kits. It gave them the opportunity to dream and do something that was completely unique to them.”

She also said children have a lot of unique ways to use their Creative Book Kits:

“Two tween girls who got book kits from Bindeybook at Christmas were so excited—they had never had anything like this. One of the girls used it like a journal where she could share testimony about what God’s been doing in her life.”

Bindeybook: why it’s different

Bindeybook appeals to parents and those who work with children.

Why? Children’s actual hand-created content (vs. digital perfections) make up the book. All you need is a writing or drawing utensil and your imagination.

Children or teens write and/or draw in the Creative Book Kit, draw what they want on the cover, then parents or leaders drop the completed kit into the postage-paid packet provided, and they’re done.

Later, a personal, unique, beautiful hard-bound book gets sent back that will last a lifetime.

  • Nonprofits—for fundraisers or program enhancements

Getting started with Bindeybook takes just a few simple steps:

  1. Reach out to get started: Website | 205.983.8040
  2. Order a Creative Book Kit for each child in your group—Bindeybook can even design a custom cover for your group, if you like.
  3. Once you receive your kits, get your group to design their 26-sheet books, covers and bookmarks—they can draw, write or even scribble.
  4. Ship the completed book back in the prepaid business reply envelope.

Once your package arrives at Bindeybook’s HQ on West Valley Avenue in Homewood, they get to work on the next stage of the book-making process.

We got a behind-the-scenes look—here’s what some of the stages include:

  • The book starts its production journey with one of Bindeybook’s 30+ designers who scan, edit and get the book ready for binding.
  • Next, they run the content through a specialized book binder that glues the content together so there are no loose pages.
  • Their binding professionals create the book’s hard cover with an automated cover maker.
  • After a few final processes such as trimming, laminating + adhering covers and spine smashing, the book is finished and ready to be cherished forever.
