Latinos con Onda is a grassroots movement bridging communities in Birmingham through Latinx events, music, dance, culture and social media.

“That’s what we’re trying to make—a community for all of us so we can talk to each other, hang onto each other and just have a good community with good energy. Only 60-70% of our attendees are Latino. It’s a multicultural party and we hope that everyone feels welcome. I love it when I see people of all colors and all sexual orientations dancing like it was the last day of the world.”

2. Antiposada is Saturday, December 23

La Posada is a huge celebration across Mexico, no matter who you are or where you come from. The centerpiece of the evening is a reenactment of the nativity story, where Joseph and Mary are looking for a place to stay in Bethlehem, complete with traditional songs that accompany their search.

Antiposada is an alternative take started here in Birmingham four years ago by Kristhian Treviño. This year, there will be more elements of a traditional Posada but with the Latinos con Onda touch to make it a great party.

Unlike previous years, this year’s celebration will include traditional La Posada elements, tamales from across Latin America, music, a Limited Edition “Latinos con Onda Cerveza Navideña” beer release and piñatas.

This Mexican lager is a collaboration between Latinos con Onda and Ghost Train Brewing Company and brings together the rich flavors of Mexico with the spirit of the season. The can features a lively Santa Claus and Krampus, a dark-haired creature from European folklore for swapping misbehaving children created by the talented Mexican illustrator, Jorge Chávez, also known as El Barbas.

There will also be typical drinks like Champurrado, Atole, Mexican hot chocolate and Ponche—all of which can be spiked with a little liquor to add to the warmth of the evening.

“Antiposada is giving our community a place to celebrate our traditions and our culture but it’s also a place where we want people from all different communities to come and experience what we’re really about, which is creating connections.”
