Former Birmingham Stallions kicker shatters NFL records
Reading time: 2 minutes
Former Birmingham Stallions kicker Brandon Aubrey made history during the Dallas Cowboys 33-14 rout of the Philadelphia Eagles last night, becoming the first NFL kicker to make field goals of at least 59 yards or more.
He also extended his consecutive field goal streak to 30, an NFL rookie record.
Aubrey’s journey from software engineer to NFL
A Cinderella story, before kicking for the NFC league leading Cowboys, Aubrey played soccer at the Notre Dame and USL Championship’s Bethlehem Steel. Out of professional soccer by the late 2010s, Aubrey worked as a software engineer until he latched onto the two-time USFL defending champion Stallions in 2022.
During his two year stint with the Stallions, Aubrey was “money” making 37 of his 44 regular and postseason field goal attempts, This fall the Cowboys gave the 2022 USFL All-Star the starting job. He has rewarded their confidence by not missing a single field goal attempt in the first 13 games this season.
More records coming?
How far is Aubrey from the NFL record for consecutive field goals? Adam Vinateri holds that distinction at 44.
Perhaps more impressive with last night’s performance, the USFL stalwart accomplished football’s equivalent of baseball’s “cycle” hitting four field goals from, 45, 50, 59 and 60 yards out.
What’s next? Giddy Up!
What’s next for the 28 year-old NFL rookie? An NFL consecutive field goal record? A deep championship run with the Cowboys giving Aubrey 3 rings in 3 seasons?
Stay tuned. Meanwhile, don’t be surprised if you start hearing Cowboy fans using the Birmingham Stallions cheer when the soccer player, software engineer, USFL champion kicker comes out onto the field — Giddy up!
