Trussville’s waterways were shown some love today, November 30 thanks to a new project led by the Friends of Pinchgut Creek. The organization unveiled a series of captivating interpretive signs along the Cahaba River and Pinchgut Creek.
The story behind Friends of Pinchgut Creek’s project
As you may know, Friends of Pinchgut Creek’s mission is to protect the Cahaba Headwaters. To continue its efforts, the organization decided to create several environmental education installations for the City of Trussville to help the community learn about the importance of the Cahaba Headwaters.
“The trail system that runs next to the Cahaba River in Trussville is a great asset to our community and we hope the walkers that frequent this trail will enjoy learning more about the river.”

Aiding in the project were:
- Local volunteers
- Sponsors Cawaco RC&D, Alabama Scenic River Trail, the Cahaba River Keeper + The Cahaba River Society
- The City of Trussville
- Trussville resident + graphic designer Ashley Warren
Drawing attention to the Cahaba River + beyond
The installation includes six signs in total.
The Cahaba River Greenway has five, each designed to inform the public about the waterways and animals found there.
The sixth, and final sign, was placed on Pinchgut Creek in the Trussville Entertainment District. It highlights the importance of tributary streams with the Cahaba River Headwaters.

More on the unveiling in Trussville
Among those there to present the signs to the City of Trussville were:
- Members to the board of Directors for Friends of Pinchgut Creek, President Alex Dowell, Jean Cox, Brett Martin and Cheryl Hamilton.
- Representative Danny Garret
- Trussville Mayor Buddy Choat
Following the unveiling, those in attendance had the chance to walk along the river trail to view additional signs that address important topics related to water quality and aquatic animal identification.
“My favorite of the signs is next to the historic green bridge in Civitan Park. The bridge is a great place to watch fish in our crystal clear water. So, we designed a sign to teach people about some of the fish species that we frequently see there.”
