WVTM 13’s Day of Giving benefiting Children’s of Alabama was Thursday, November 30, raising $40,000 in funds for children and families in need of life-saving care in Birmingham and beyond. Here’s a closer look at the event.

How WVTM 13’s Day of Giving got its start

Last year on December 1, WVTM 13 hosted its first Day of Giving benefiting Children’s of Alabama. When the station’s meteorologist Jerry Tracey announced his retirement after 35 years with the station, they knew they had to do something big.

With Tracey’s former role as co-host for the Children’s Miracle Network telethons benefiting Children’s of Alabama from 1989-2006, WVTM 13 decided to reprise his role and bring the telethon back.

During the telethon, Children’s of Alabama patients and staff joined WVTM 13 to share inspiring stories about their personal experiences. Did their efforts to raise awareness and funds for the hospital work? Absolutely! Hundreds of pledges rolled in with total donations reaching $55,300.

WVTM 13 will be hosting their annual Day of Giving this year on Thursday, November 30, featuring special guest interviews and more.

“Our mission at WVTM 13 is to serve our community, and there is no better way to serve than to help give back to an institution that touches almost every child in our state. It made perfect sense to take the amazing success of our first Day of Giving in 2022 and expand it to an annual outreach to our generous community.

We know the WVTM 13 audience cares about kids. Being able to share stories of the children touched and medical staff changed by the work at Children’s of Alabama is one of the greatest rewards for WVTM 13.”

Children’s of Alabama, located in Birmingham, has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children for more than 100 years. Not only is it one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the US, providing over 75 areas of service and treating patients from every county in the state, but it’s been named one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals for 14 consecutive years by US News & World Report.

Thanks to generous donors who tuned into this year’s WVTM 13’s Day of Giving, $40,000 was raised for Children’s of Alabama.

Where do the proceeds go and how will they help Children’s of Alabama?

All telethon funds will go toward the highest priority needs of Children’s of Alabama, providing the resources needed to give ill and injured children from across the state and Southeast the best healthcare possible.

Donations also ensure Children’s of Alabama can:

  • Provide compassionate care to treat the whole child, physically and emotionally, along with programs like Child Life and Pastoral Care.
  • Offer assistance through social services who support families during a time of crisis.
  • Invest in state-of-the-art equipment and technology to better equip medical staff and ensure the best possible treatment and outcome for patients.

Best of all, the donation will help Children’s of Alabama save lives and create brighter futures for kids and their families.
