Itchin’ to belly-laugh at incredible comedy in Birmingham? Look no further. Several popular comedians are performing at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) in the coming year—read on to find out who!

Birmingham is becoming a comedy destination

In case you haven’t noticed, Birmingham has become a hotbed for comedy shows. For example, earlier this month Jerry Seinfeld—co-creator and star of the hit 90’s sitcom Seinfeld—performed a sold-out show at the BJCC Concert Hall.

In addition to our own robust local comedy scene, a number of other award-winning, nationally-known comedians have performed at the BJCC in recent years, including:

1. Leanne Morgan — Just Getting Started

Stand-up comic Leanne Morgan discovered her passion for comedy after having her first child. Morgan began cracking jokes while selling jewelry at house parties to make a little extra cash—soon, the jewelry company was asking her to perform at sales rallies.

After performing in comedy clubs and prestigious comedy festivals, Leanne’s fame skyrocketed when a clip went viral in 2018.

In April, Morgan produced her own Netflix special, titled Leanne Morgan: I’m Every Woman. Now, she’s bringing her jokes about life, marriage and motherhood to cities around the nation on her second comedy tour, “Just Getting Started”.

2. Matt Rife — ProbleMATTic World Tour

Comedian Matt Rife took an interest in comedy at a young age, and, with encouragement from friends and family, began performing in 2015. After over a decade of performing in smaller comedy clubs, Rife got a big break when a clip from one of his shows went viral on TikTok. Over the following months, he skyrocketed in popularity—in fact, tickets to his ProbleMATTic World Tour sold so fast he had a Taylor Swift moment and crashed the Ticketmaster website.

3. Jeff Dunham — Still Not Canceled

On Friday, November 17, Jeff Dunham will be bringing his “Still Not Canceled” tour to the Legacy Arena at the BJCC. A stand-up comic and ventriloquist for nearly 50 years, Jeff Dunham is best known for his array of reoccurring puppet characters, including:

  • Walter
  • Peanut
  • José Jalapeño on a Stick
  • Bubba J
  • Achmed the Dead Terrorist

Hailed as his funniest comedy tour to date, the “Still Not Canceled” tour will take Jeff Dunham and his cast of puppet characters to 44 North American cities. Plus, Dunham is introducing a new puppet to his entourage—”URL”, an internet-obsessed millennial nerd.

4. Birmingham Comedy Festival

The BJCC is kicking off 2024 with the Birmingham Comedy Festival, featuring five hilarious and well-known comedians:

  • Sommore—also known as the “Diva of Contemporary Comedy”—was the first female host of BET’s ComicView and starred in The Queens of Comedy.
  • Lavell Crawford—who you might recognize from his role as Huell Babineux in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul—has performed standup comedy since the 1990s, when he frequently performed on BET’s ComicView.
  • Bruce Bruce is an actor and comedian known for his wit, improv and infectious personality!
  • Bill Bellamy is a comedian, actor and cousin to Shaquille O’Neal!
  • Tony T. Roberts has appeared on HBO’s Def Comedy JamBET’s ComicViewIt’s Showtime at the Apollo and other shows, all while performing standup comedy around the world.

5. Paula Poundstone

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Paula Poundstone began her stand-up comedy career at open-mic nights at comedy clubs until she was spotted by Robin Williams, who encouraged her to try her act in Los Angeles. In addition to standup, she’s starred in several HBO specials, is a regular panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! and hosts her own weekly podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone.

As a standup comic, Poundstone is famous for her ability to improvise her act thanks to interactions from the audience. Some say she’s never performed the same act twice!

6. Bert Kreischer

Bert Kreischer—AKA “The Machine”—is coming to Birmingham next year during his “Tops Off World Tour”. Known for his propensity for performing shirtless and his outlandish stories from his partying days, Bert Kreischer is one comedian you don’t want to miss!

7. Nate Bargatze

Hailed as “The Nicest Man in Stand-Up,” Nate Bargatze is a stand-up comedian known for his clean and relatable comedy—perfect for all age groups! Nate has several Netflix specials—”The Tennessee Kid”, “Greatest Average American” and “The Stand-ups.” His latest special, “Hello, World,” can be found on Amazon Prime Video.

Nate is currently traveling the world on his new “Be Funny” tour—and bringing the laughs to Birmingham on May 11!

Tickets to see Nate Bargatze will be available on Friday, October 27.
