Becoming The Addams Family at Virginia Samford Theatre
With Halloween looming ahead, it’s the perfect time to see The Addams Family at VST.
According to Jenna Bellamy, the show’s director, the seasonal vibe helped create a unique aura around the show; it also helped the cast discover just how important hair and makeup can be.
“This has probably been our most ambitious technical youth production we’ve done. It’s got the creepiness in the set, costumes, hair and makeup, so it’s been a lot of fun seeing the kids think more about how their look impacts their performance.”
Jenna Bellamy, Director, VST’s The Addams Family
To help bring the cast’s Addams family looks to life, VST brought in local makeup artist Barry Perkins to give them a crash course on bringing their ghoulish characters to life. (Barry is known for his truly scary makeup found at local Halloween haunts like Atrox Factory).
Barry explained how big of a role he thinks makeup plays in character expression, for the entire show but with a special emphasis on The Addams’ ancestors.
“Their character expression is expressed through their makeup. They might not have lines, but you can have memorable characters just based on how they look.”
