What you can expect at Light the Night
What exactly is Light the Night? The name gives a glimmer, but here’s a closer look.
Light the Night is a community-wide, free event with all that you’d expect from a big outdoor festivity—a kids’ zone, food, music and a program.
But the real headliner is the lights. Lanterns are given to all participants, each with a special significance relating to those whose lives have been affected in some way by blood cancer.
- White lanterns are held by survivors and current patients.
- Gold lanterns are held by those who have lost someone to cancer.
- Red lanterns are held by supporters.
Attendees light their lanterns at the same time, turning Railroad Park into an even more magical place.
“It gives that visual aspect to show our patients and the people that are going through this that we are there supporting them.”
Barrett Ford, Campaign Development Director, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
After the lanterns are lit, participants take a stroll around the park. What an impactful way to show we’re all in it together.
BONUS: The event goes out with a bang—a fireworks show!

Light the Night helps those affected by blood cancer
As you can see, Light the Night is a feel-good event. But it’s even more than that. Proceeds from the event directly impact those affected by blood cancers and their families.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the organization behind the event, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is one of the local sponsors.
LLS’s goal is to fund research for blood cancers as well as provide patient and family support. One of their main fundraising events in Birmingham is Light the Night with the community coming together to help raise money for their cause.
Individual fundraisers and communities along with school and corporate teams are already joining in—see who’s on the leaderboard!
