Human Rights New Works Festival in Birmingham—Sept. 22-24

Red Mountain Theatre
Human Rights New Works Festival. (Red Mountain Theatre)

In its sixth year, RMT will be using the power of the theatre to spark world-changing conversations about big issues and emotions happening right here in Birmingham.

Featuring three stunning pieces over three inspiring days, each show is so new it’s still evolving through the creative process. This means you’ll see staged readings or bare-bone shows, allowing you to focus on the true creative beauty of the work.

All shows will be followed by a discussion with a community partner who deals with the issues portrayed in the show and what’s being done in Birmingham to fix it. Trust me, you’ll want to be part of the conversation.

Here’s a peek at the three pieces featured during this year’s Human Rights New Works Festival:

1. She Reached for Heaven—Friday, Sept. 22

Set against the backdrop of the biggest drug crisis in our country’s history, this brand-new musical follows one woman’s journey to embrace life in all its messiness rather than escape it through addiction.

*Community partners: Recovery Resource Center & Jefferson County Department of Health

2. Sam’s Room—Saturday, Sept. 23

A pop concert/dramedy, you’ll follow along with a nonspeaking teenager named Sam on his path to find a way to communicate.

The role of Sam in this show is played by Jacob Fiveash, a young neurodiverse actor from Birmingham who’s bringing his own lived experience to define the character.

*Community Partners: United Ability and Spring Valley School

3. Four Little Girls, Birmingham 1963—Sunday, Sept. 24

This play brings life and music to the stories of Denise, Carole, Cynthia, and Addie Mae before the fateful events of September 1963 took their lives at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

This work is a partnership of RMT and Sixteenth Street Baptist Church to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement and Children’s March in our city.
