Temps are soaring once again in the Greater Birmingham Area. Over the next week, the National Weather Service Birmingham reports heat indices in the low to mid 100s. As dangerous as hot weather is to us, it’s just as dangerous for our pets. While we suggest staying inside, we know that you and your furry friends might be itching to get out and about. Luckily, we have some dog-friendly places in Birmingham where you and your pup can have fun and keep cool.

1. Cahaba Brewing Company

Brutally high temps can work up a mighty thirst. While water is, of course, the best choice for hydration, a delicious local beer sure can hit the spot.

Cahaba Brewing Company is a great spot to grab a refreshing beverage and A/C. What’s awesome is you can take your dog inside with you. Water bowls are available, too, so your dog can stay cool and hydrated.

Where: 4500 5th Ave S Building C, Birmingham, AL 35222

2. Cahaba Dog Park + river

If you live in Trussville or are just traveling through, plan some time for your pup to enjoy the Cahaba Dog Park. Here, you’ll find plenty of shade for some cooler play outdoors as well as drinking water available. The best part? The park is located right by the Cahaba River.

“Many people take their dogs to the river for a dip before or after they play with their buddies inside the park.”

Seeking a shady place where air is flowing? Good Dog Park & Bar on 1st Ave S in Birmingham is the place to be.

Here you’ll find full shade and several fans—some massive in size—to keep you and your dog cool on sweltering summer days. As you can see from the photo above, you’ll find plenty of exciting water options, too.

While humans get free admission, dogs do require a fee. Day passes are available on-site. You can also purchase a membership here.

Where: 2307 1st Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233

4. Turkey Creek Nature Preserve

An amazing way to stay cool during steamy weather is to head to a local swimming hole. Turkey Creek Nature Preserve is a popular spot for local outdoor-types, especially when you’re looking for a refreshing swim.

Where: 3906 Turkey Creek Rd, Pinson, AL 35126

5. Wet Nose Wednesdays at Regions Field

Take your pup out to the ball game for Wet Nose Wednesdays with the Birmingham Barons beginning August 2. On these special promo nights, dogs are welcome inside the park for a night of baseball, cold drinks and treats—and even a hotdog or two.
